Who wants Critiques? + Long overdue Features!

Journal Entry: Wed Jan 11, 2012, 7:55 PM
Hey Guys!

It has been a very long time since the last time I updated this. For this I am sorry!
From now on I will aim to post one journal entry a week, so we can all know what has been happening.

Some recent things for me:

- Last year, I officially started business as Break Free Photography! Working as a sole trader with a home based office, I am looking into renting out a studio space for those rare times I need it.
Business has been slow, and for a while I became very sick, so I could not work. But since recently recovering I am pushing myself forward again, trying to get more jobs and money and doing TFP only when it will definitely help my portfolio.

- On new years day, disaster struck! I lost a lot of gear while taking photos up at arthur's seat. I won't go into the details, but needless to say I probably lost around 1K of gear up there.
Understandably, this has me quite annoyed, but thankfully I didn't lose everything, and I can still do a good shoot with what I have. It will take me a while to replace all of it though. :(

- I may be getting some work published in a magazine sometime soon, not confirmed, but looking rather likely. I won't spill any details, but needless to say, I am rather excited about this. I'm thinking I should probably attempt to work for a few publications, get work that has a high exposure rate.

- This year I will be writing tutorials at request, so if you have anything you want to learn, let me know and I will do my best to teach!

- On a similar note, I wish to start writing critiques, to learn how to start evaluating photos better, sharpening my eye and all that jazz. If you have any pieces you would like me to critique, please don't hesitate to ask, and I will give you as honest a critique as i am able! :)

- Throughout this coming year, I am looking at amping up the amount and quality of photography I pump out. If you think you can help me in some way, please let me know, and I hope I am able to help you in return!

- Since my last Journal, I have been collecting photos to feature. Photos that I deem to be on the amazing side of talent. Please take a moment to have a look through!

Well, that is it from me today. I hope to hear from you all soon!

Yours in service,

Do take a moment to look through the feature, a lot of hard work has gone into them from some very amazing people!

Hey guys!

Sorry it has been a while since I last uploaded, but things keep getting in the way!

First of all: THANK YOU!! To everyone who has supported me to this point, you are appreciated more than you will ever know. I can't believe how far I have gone in over a year, it amazes me!

Some news:

-The wedding went really well, the weather was fine and my photos were liked by the couple. :) I will put some up when they get back to me with a list of any they do not want up here.

-I have applied for a BA in photography at RMIT for 2011. This degree is something I really want to do, despite the commitment is will demand of me. I was meant to hear back from the uni today to see if I was shortlisted, but I have not received the email. Research has shown me that they are ate some years, so i am really hoping this is the case. I will keep you posted!

-Lots of projects coming up! The majority of which are individuals wanting portraits for themselves, but 2 standouts are a jazz quartet wanting promotional photos and an author who has asked me to take the photos for her book, which from the sounds of things is in for a good chance of getting strong popularity!

I will definitely keep you guys posted on things more frequently from now on!

Love J.

Do take a moment to look through the feature, a lot of hard work has gone into them from some very amazing people!

After 3 weeks in the shop, my camera is back in action!
I'm going to be taking so many photos! I can't wait!
If anyone is wanting to catch up to have their photos taken or to take photos with me, let me know!

I've been getting more and more paid work! It's really cool!
I'm going to be applying for work at photography studios, just part time or casual, until I can start my Degree next year.

Live free, die hard and leave a confusing autopsy!

Lots of features!

Bad news, everyone!

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 15, 2010, 7:03 PM
So last Thursday I got all the new gear. I am in love with it!

I got the following:
Nikkor 18-105mm VR
SB-600 Flash
2 umbrellas
2.8M Light stand.

On the same day, my camera decided to malfunction. The Aperture stopped working, it just wouldn't open up. I checked it and the aperture lever was fine, both on the lens and body. So now its in the repair shop for a minimum of two weeks and for a lot of monies. :(

This makes me sad...

On the plus side, doing a wedding soon, will be getting more gear from the pay-off there! Probably another SB-600. :D

Live long and prosper!

Hey guys!

It's been a very long time since I've written anything! I didn't have a computer for first 6 months of year. Now, I own a brand new iMac and I am in love!
I've been working hard at my photography and it's starting to pay off! I've been getting jobs!:D
I'm considering setting myself up as a proper freelance photographer.

I am not studying yet, as planned. I got accepted into one place but too expensive. Another isn't accepting local students and others either are not what I'm looking for or follow similar themes. So will wait until next year and I'll apply at RMIT for the Degree in Photography.

I'm back and I'm here to stay.

Break free, all of you, so that you may achieve wonderment.

I'd just like to give a sincere thanks to all the people that have supported me this far. :tighthug:

I feel I've improved a lot in the time I've had, especially considering those months where I could do nothing due to that pesky broken lens!

I have decided that today I will feature a few artists! Woo! Features!  :thumb139235368:

Recently I have been doing a lot of random shoots just fro friends, Most of which I honestly should put the best of up here. Like last Tuesday for example I went out with Whimsical-Dreams and xShesElectricx and we just had fun walking around and I took some really nice photos of them!

I also recently joined a medieval group at which I will be taking lots more photos and putting them up here, as there will be plenty of photo opportunities!

My current plans for me include moving out, finding full time work and saving up for things I want, like photography course, Camera Equipment and a motorcycle! I think once I have all of these things under my belt I will be ready to face the world!

Love you all!

Around 2 months ago I broke the mount on my lens... I was really quite SAD!!!
But, last Thursday I acquired a new lens!!! I got a Nikkor 50mm 1.8D. I'm really happy with the quality of this lens!

So this means I'm going to pick up the pace and start photographing a lot more!

I probably wont be doing my course till halfway through next year, as I still only have two casual jobs, which is far from enough. But such is life.

I hope my photos are getting better!

My life recently has been a bit different. I've been studying some philosophies on The Art of Living from a guru from India. I really enjoyed it, and it's helped me a lot with my meditation (especially fine tuning my mind when I meditate with my Long Staff) and some thought processes, simply by making me think about my thoughts that bit more. Highly recommended.

I've been taking thousands of photos! I love, and I mean LOVE, my new camera! Just keep forgetting that I actually should post a few up, too... Sorry guys!

I'm still looking for work in the city, but am a bit busy with a show that opens this week at the National Theatre:
[shameless plug] You should come and see it! I'm playing trombone for it and it is hilarious! [/shameless plug]

I can not wait till next year when I start studying photography!

SOooooo happy with it :D

Can't wait dammit!)

Quick Update!
My new Nikon D90 should be here either on Thursday or Friday! :D
I have opted to go with the Nikkor 18-55mm VR lens, this way I can get the battery grip and an extra battery for relatively the same price, and will save up for a new lens from here on in.

I can't wait! I'll probably take it with me this weekend, as I'm going away down to a place called Kangaroobie, which is near the 12 apostles. I'm going down there for a weekend long rehearsal for a Pantomime I'm working on. Quick plug:

It's amazing how many people put up their hand to have a photo shoot once they know that you can shoot reasonably well and have a good camera. I have so many awesome candidates and I don't know what to do with them all!

My best friend Gloria (who happens to be in some of my photos) is working on an emblem for me to stick on my photos. It's roughly going to resemble a tattoo I designed myself which is on the back of my neck, so it's a true sign of me. I have also decided on a name for any company I decide to start with photography: 'Break Free Photography'. 'Break Free' are two words which mean a lot to me in life, if you want a full explanation feel free to ask.

And I thought this would be a quick update! Oh and it's also my first Journal that wasn't made on a Monday!

Much love to you all!

Hurray! It's official, I'm getting a Nikon D90 with a Tamron 18-200mm lens!
So now my goals for this year are:
-Find a job in the city
-Move into the city
-Save money
-Spend money on the course
-Spend money on equipment
I can't wait! Oh and my girlfriend fits in there somewhere too.
Anyone looking to hire a hard working man in the city of Melbourne? Hmm?

Bah! Why can't I just have a million dollars to do with as a please?
It looks like I'm going to have to postpone the course till next year so I can raise some money to be able to fall back on in case of emergency.
So I need a job. anyone want a rookie photographer? I am also planning on getting a place closer to the city. Job first though. Anything decent will do. I'm a hard worker, but I do have a strong sense of pride.
Now, with cameras, I've narrowed it down to either the Nikon D90 or D5000, with the D90 the stronger contender, as I believe in the long run it'll be cheaper, as I assume I'll be buying a lot of second hand lenses, which are more compatible to the D90 than with the newer D5000, as the D5000 lacks the inbuilt AF engine.
Only a month to go till I get it! It's going o be for my 21st.
Well, I hope you are all well!

I have been looking around at places that offer to teach photography. So far my favourite is Photography Studies College (PSC). The PSC is located on south Bank in the Melbourne CBD. A friend of mine did this course as a full time student, which takes 3 years to complete and gives you an Advanced Diploma in Photography. Unfortunately I will be unable to do it full time, simply due to the cost!
A full time year at the PSC costs AU$14,000, which is WAY out of my price range! With no HECS option! That would be AU$42,000+ Additional costs! I am thinking of doing the Part time option instead, which is somewhere between AU$3,500 and AU$4,500 a year, and goes over four years.
Another thing I need to consider is which DSLR to buy. I think I've decided on Nikon, at least, as I've owned a Nikon previously and found it pretty simple to use. So my options are the D300, D5000, D700, D80 and D90. Most likely it'll be the D5000 or D90, purely because they have the sensor I need for the course, and are more in my price range. I would prefer the D5000 because of it innovative screen.

Well, wish me luck!

Well after having a lot of my possessions stolen including my art book and Diary (in which I had been writing for a couple of years) I have decided to start something new, give it a completely fresh start.
So, photography is what I've chosen. I've always wanted to make something moving, inspiring, something that evokes feelings in a person. To me, photography has always done that.
I plan on buying myself a nice DSLR, either Canon or Nikon, we shall see. I currently own a Nikon Coolpix L12, which does a good job in itself, but it could be a lot better.
Wish me luck!
